Nehemiah 10 — A Covenant with Concrete Shape
Yesterday we watched confession become worship (ch. 9). Today the people “seal” it. The Hebrew word for the sealed document (’amanah) echoes trust and firmness—faith crystallized into practice. The chapter’s cadence—“We obligate ourselves… we will bring… we will not…”—forms a litany of love. Notice the refrain “the house of our God” (beit Eloheinu); anaphora gathers the community around God’s presence.
Three arenas of consecration - Households: no marriages that dilute covenant identity (10:30). Not ethnic pride but faithful worship (cf. Deuteronomy 7:3–4; 2 Corinthians 6:14). - Time: Sabbath and the sabbatical year guarded (10:31). Jeremiah warned against gate-trading on Sabbath (Jeremiah 17:21–27); Nehemiah now pledges restraint. - Resources: a third-shekel support, wood-lots by casting lots, firstfruits and tithes (10:32–39). The unusual “third part of a shekel” likely reflects Persian weights and lean economics; Yehud coins and the Elephantine papyri illuminate this Persian-period setting. The “wood offering” later became a joyful Second Temple festival (Mishnah Ta‘anit 4.5), supplying the ever-burning altar (Leviticus 6:12).
“Binding themselves with a curse and an oath” (’alah u-shevuah) sounds severe, yet Augustine would say rightly ordered loves need rightly ordered habits. Calvin called such vows “fences” for obedience. This is grace’s grammar: after mercy (ch. 9) comes practiced fidelity (James 1:22). The final line, “We will not neglect the house of our God” (New International Version), anticipates the church’s stewardship: Christ the firstfruits (1 Corinthians 15:20), we his living temple (1 Corinthians 3:16), “not neglecting to meet together” (Hebrews 10:25).
Consider singing: “We Give Thee but Thine Own.”

Prayer Faithful Lord, set our loves in order. Teach us Sabbath pace, covenantal households, and glad generosity. Let our vows be simple and steadfast, our habits a living altar of praise. Keep us from neglect—of your house, your people, your mission—through Jesus our firstfruits and High Priest. Amen.
