Colossians was written by the Apostle Paul to believers in the city of Colossae, a place in ancient Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey). Though once a busy city, Colossae later became overshadowed by its neighbors, such as Laodicea and Hierapolis. Archaeological research shows that earthquakes and shifting trade routes contributed to its decline. Still, the Christian church there faced confusion from different teachings that blended Jewish and Greek ideas, questioning who Jesus really is.
Paul’s letter addresses these doubts head-on. In Colossians 1, he
lifts our eyes to Jesus as the supreme and eternal Son of God. Paul
reminds the believers that: - Christ is the image of God we can see and
know (verse 15).
- All things were created through Him and for Him (verse 16).
- Through Christ’s sacrifice, we are rescued and redeemed (verses
13–14).
This chapter also contains Paul’s prayer for the Colossians. He prays that they would be filled with wisdom and spiritual understanding, so they might live honorably as followers of Jesus (verses 9–10). This prayer reminds us that faith is not only about knowing facts but also about walking in God’s will.
• The people of Colossae faced a mix of religious beliefs, some
claiming that Jesus was not fully divine. Paul counters by emphasizing
Christ’s authority over all creation.
• Archaeological finds indicate the region was often influenced by
Eastern traditions. This may explain why false teachings appealed to a
blend of spiritual and cultural ideas, making Paul’s focus on Christ’s
supremacy so urgent.
• Paul’s words resonate today: just as Colossian believers were called
to stand firm against cultural pressures, so are we in our modern
world.
• John 1:1–3 – Christ as the Word who was with God and is God.
• Ephesians 1:7 – Redemption through Jesus’s blood.
• Hebrews 1:3 – Christ as the radiance of God’s glory.
Dear Lord,
Thank You for showing us the supremacy of Christ in all things. Help us
stand strong against any influence that lowers Him in our eyes. Draw us
closer to You, filling us with wisdom and understanding, that we may
honor You in every part of our lives. May our hearts be steady in
devotion and our spirits joyful in hope. In Jesus’s name we pray,
Amen.
