2 Chronicles Chapter 17

2 Chronicles 17 — A Heart Lifted High

Heart - Jehoshaphat begins where Asa ended poorly (see yesterday): he seeks, not schemes. “His heart was courageous in the ways of the LORD” (English Standard Version). The Hebrew says vayigbah libbo—“his heart was lifted high” (v. 6). Usually “high heart” signals pride, but here it is holy confidence: boldness rooted in obedience.

Word - In year three he dispatches officials, Levites, and priests with “the Book of the Law of the LORD” (v. 9). This is a national catechism—Word-centered renewal that involves lay leaders and clergy alike. Deuteronomy’s pattern comes alive (Deut 6); compare Ezra 7:10; 2 Timothy 3:16–17. The Chronicler notes “fear of the LORD” falls on surrounding nations—teaching becomes mission.

Peace and Strength - Fortified cities and a vast muster close the chapter. Archaeology of Judah’s Shephelah shows such border defenses were real, yet the text’s logic is theological: Torah → fear of the LORD → rest → sustainable strength. Note: he removed high places and Asherim (v. 6); some Yahwistic shrines lingered (20:33)—a reminder reforms are often partial.

Cross-references: 2 Chronicles 16:9; Deuteronomy 6; Psalm 119; 2 Timothy 3:16–17.

Hymn: “Jesus Shall Reign” (nations bringing tribute; ordered peace under the true King).

Prayer Lift our hearts high in Your ways, O Lord—bold but not proud. Make our homes and churches schools of Your Word. Grant our teaching to bear fruit in holiness, peace, and quiet courage, for Jesus’ sake. Amen.
